" with yr white lace & yr wedding veil - you look the picture of contented new wealth "

a huge w.o.agwu thank you to everyone who joined in with or gommented on my 5 questions "meme" thingy the other day - i thort or hoped i might get one or two ppl playing along but was overwhelmed by the triffic responses & answers

fear not, gentle reader - any gomments to this post will NOT result in me asking you any more questions, i promise

however, here we go w/a goupla sets of my stupid answers to other ppls snappy questions ( yes, i am the bizarro dave berg ) - which i've already posted in the gomment areas of their LJs - ladies first, so here are my five answers to [info]lunacee:

1. "if you had to pick 5 comics of your own collection to save in a fire or some situation that would force you to only save 5 comics, which would you choose and why?"

- i think i'd get burnt to death in the fire trying to narrow it down to  just five...!

"seriously", i know i sound like an awful hippy - but all my gomics = replaceable - & altho i've got some valuable ones ( due to my advanced years & goob fortune ) - i'm mostly into reading the stories rather than gollecting 'em just for the sake of gollecting 'em - so i could get cheap reprints ( also we are insured )

the gomics related stuff i'd wanna save = is my gollection of original comics art - which is irreplaceable - obv i'd wanna save it all but if i had to narrow it down to 5: i've got three pages by my gomics hero jack kirby ( a thor, an inhumans & a machine man), a drawing of enid out of ghost world by daniel clowes ( which also has great sentimental value ) & a painting of obscure 80s characters holly & polly by tony lee

but if that's not allowed - off the top of my head 5 fave gomics to rescue: blue beetle no.5 by ditko, mister miracle no.18 by kirby, ghost world by clowes, avengers no.181 by michelinie & byrne, plus my better half owns a gopy of fantastic four no.1 ( lee & kirby ) - so i guess i ought to save that ( gontradicting everything i've said above - which is typical of me! )

2. "have you ever shouted in a library? why or why not?"

i must've done at school but if i did i can't remember - i got "the slipper" once for leaning against a radiator in the library when i shouldof been outside in the fresh air ( ie the cold )

nowadays i'm almost pathetically law abiding ( w/one or two exceptions ) & i don't tend to break many rules at all

the putney library has been goob to me so i wouldn't wanna cause 'em any trouble - they do let me wear my headphones so i spose there's always the danger i might accidentally start singing along to mozza or summat without thinking - but i really wouldn't want to disturb anyone reading, sleeping or even working if i gould avoid it

3. "can you sew or knit?"

tragically, no - not even to save my life - why wasn't i taught a useful skill like this at school? ( mind you, after two years of woodwork i still can't put up a shelf - & am pathologically afraid of flat pack furniture )

4. "if you were invited to a fancy dress party tomorrow, what costume would you choose?"

an easy one this - i've only the one option: i could wear my bright red giant towelling muumuu - & i could paint my face, hands & feet red - & dye my hair green - & hey presto: i'd be a great big TOMATO ( yes, even more so than usual )

5. "if you had to teach a dog a trick, what would you pick?"

i'm not sure if it counts as a trick but i'd like to teach my new imaginary dog sammy to roll over - but everytime she got half way thru i'd tickle her on the tummy - & get covered in drool & lickums

alas, i've done such a poor job of "training" our cats, i'm not sure the authorities would let me loose on a dog ( - i sure would like to have a doggy one day tho )

that's it - question 1 was the hardest - w/the most thort required - all the other answers came to me pretty immediately - i think no.3 = my fave q

 ******

& here we go here we go here we go w/5 answers to [info]percyprune:

(1) Ginsters or Pukka Pies?

it's gotta be: "socialise with pukka pies...!" - chicken & mushroom pie & chips w/gravy plse

(2) If you spilled Hulk's pint, how would you do to make it up to him?

if i spilled anybody's pint, i hope i'd buy 'em a new one ( - i don't like to think of myself as having bad manners ) ( tho alas it may be true on occasions )

i don't think that hulk = much of a boozer tho - he's v.keen on beans* - so perhaps i'd buy him some tins of heinz or cross & blackwell - maybe the ones w/the little sausages in - that should cheer him up

* that's the easily summed up difference between the proper marvel universe & the ultimate marvel universe: ultimate hulk eats people - whereas the real hulk prefers beans ( personally, i prefer the bean eating version )

(3) Do you like to throw shapes in the temple of dance?

o...! - i used to love a bop tho i was never ( well hardly ever ) one for nite clubs or clubbing - but any excuse at weddings, parties, gigs etc - now i'm a bit too old and far too round for dancing

my last "great" hurrah ie final extended dancing session = my 40th bday party ( w/a truly great genius dj & a smiths tribute band ) - which seems appropriate enuff to me

( - in case it isn't blindingly obvious - i was never any goob at the dancing - mostly made a fool of myself - i just liked doin' it )

i did throw myself round our front room recentlyish to pull shapes by the pipettes ( this was after a few drinks, obv ) - but it nearly killed me

(4) Who is the most bizarre superhero in the wide world of gomics?

much as i love fatman the human flying saucer, brother power the geek &/or ultra the multi alien etc - can i cheat & have a superhero team rather than just a single superhero, plse?

assuming this = ok w/you, i would like to choose the outsiders by joe simon, jerry grandenetti & grieg flessel from first issue special no.10, jan 1976

afaik it's the only appearance of this "unusual" team gonsisting of: doc scary, mighty mary, billy bighead, lizard johnny, amazing ronnie & hairy larry - here's a great summary of the ish including pics

( scroll down to the bottom of that webpage for the reason i love 'em so - the second last pic - group shot  - wot a great expression on billy bighead's face )

(5) Which can you least live without: music or gomics?

surprisingly easy choice this actually - i'd keep music & ditch the gomics plse - i'd be gompletely grippled without my music - it = the soundtrack to all our lives, innit? - keeps me sane - have to relearn how to walk down the street without my headphones on etc

also: a lot of my joy of gomics comes from thinking abt 'em, yakking abt 'em, reading abt 'em - compared to actually reading them - so, i guess i'd still have all the accumulated nerd facts in my head to keep me happy

but even if all trace of gomics & their history had to be erased from my brane & world - i'd still choose music

that's it - q.3 = the best one i think ( - tho answering it did make me feel a little bit sad ) - on first look i thort q.5 wld be the most difficult to answer - but in fact it was the easiest of choices

anyway, that's enuff answers for now - more later ( possibly )

BONUS ITEM! you've probly already seen it elsewhere but the trailer for next year's iron man flick looks great imo ( esp. tony stark & his whiskey, "to peace!" - i also luv it that they chose the music that they chose - or did it choose them? )

Given the basic point of the Hulk has always been a man's inner rage unleashed, don't you think it was a bit of a cop-out that the original version never killed anyone? I think the Ultimate one (or Azzarello & Corben's take in Banner) gets a much better handle on the idea of a pure, rampaging Id.
worldofagwu[info]worldofagwu on September 15th, 2007 02:12 pm (UTC)
i don't mind so much if hulk kills someone ( - & "logically" many hundred innocent bystanders must snuff it everytime hulk & thing have a punch up in the new york streets ) - but i would prefer it if he didn't eat them - & if he must eat ppl, couldn't he cook them first?

i was really looking forward to seeing r.corben draw the hulk but somehow it was less exciting in "real life" than it was in my imagination ( this q.often happens )

azzarello = a goob writer but i don't think his main strength = superhero gomics - the constantine in prison hellblazers he did w/corben = much better than banner imo ( i was gaptivated by "oz" at the time as well )
Alex S: seal[info]barrysarll on September 17th, 2007 05:58 pm (UTC)
I'd broadly agree as regards Azzarello, but I'd distinguish 'superhero comics' from 'comics set in a world which also has superheroes'. Yes, his Batman was only saved from being outright laughable by Risso's art, and his Superman didn't work for me at all - but Lex Luthor: Man of Steel was pretty good, and hey, Constantine hangs out with members of the Justice League sometimes. More so back when Moore wrote him, granted - but Azzarello's Constantine seemed to me to be a very back-to-basics take on him, ditching Constantine-as-tormented-narrator and taking him back to being the 'nasty piece of work' on the sidelines. Which is why I was so puzzled by its generally poor reception; I guess people wanted the established Hellblazer Constantine more than they wanted the original.

Anyway, I would similarly class Hulk as a character in a universe with superheroes, not a superhero. He's the transition point from the old monster comics, and has at least as much in common with Fin Fang Foom &c as he does with Spidey or Iron Man. So while I didn't *love* Banner like I did that Hellblazer run, I did think it worked pretty well.

Surely cookery would be as foreign to Hulk's nature as trying the handle on a door he could easily SMASH?

(Oz is indeed awesome, and indirectly led me to one of my new favourite comics writers, Marvel golden boy Dan Slott. Because his Arkham Asylum: Living Hell was promoted as a DCU Oz. This was utterly misleading, but it was nonetheless good enough in a totally different way that I didn't mind)
worldofagwu[info]worldofagwu on September 18th, 2007 12:38 pm (UTC)
o, i think our library's got gopies of lex luthor man of steel & arkham asylum living hell - so i'll give 'em a go at some point, ta

( i like slott too - he's able to balance modern & old fashioned gomics "values" successfully - & he's funny )

i wld "argue" that hulk = sometimes a superhero - ie when he's w/the defenders or when he's got banner's brain - & he is a charter member of the avengers, marvel's top superhero team

hulk cooking: well, it'd give rick jones &/or jim wilson something useful to do ( - & afterwards they cld do a cash in book "101 ways to cook a puny human" )...
Alex S: magneto[info]barrysarll on September 18th, 2007 10:46 pm (UTC)
Hey, Rick Jones has his music career to think of, and that's when he's not sharing bodies with Kree supersoldiers of varying degrees of sanity...

I may reassess my view of Hulk-qua-superhero if he rips off Iron Bastard's head at the conclusion of World War Hulk, but sadly my hopes for that happening aren't high.

"Would you pilot that thing sober?"
They could just funnel the hypothetical new readers into the Ultimate version, he's still way cool. Although I don't read his solo series because it's written by a talentless homophobe.

Re: "Would you pilot that thing sober?"
- yeah, i'd have probly bought ( or at least read ) it myself if he was merely talentless rather than the other thing

isn't the ultimate universe gonna go down the dumper now they've put jeph loeb in charge of it...? ( - tho ult. spidey's never looked so goob w/s.immonen drawing it )
Alex S: seal[info]barrysarll on September 20th, 2007 10:12 am (UTC)
Re: "Would you pilot that thing sober?"
Oh, I'd been trying to forget about that...I'm not really looking forward to Ultimatum, but the old guard still have Ultimate Origins to deploy first!
